1980s youth representation

1980: BBC (1981) “Rioters, predominantly young black men, fought police.” “More than 300 people injured”

1980’s

The 1980’s showed the beginning of Thatcher’s conservative Britain with the introduction of American capitalist ideas about individualism, consumerism and greed . These ideology’s led to taking from the poor to give to the rich causing a mass of unemployment across the country. The Daily Mirror February 1989 did an article about how the government were trying to force youth into a training scheme showing that this un-fair society even went down to the youth. As without being part of this training scheme they could not gain any benefits but the problem was there weren’t enough positions for all youth. The article “Frankie goes to Downing Street” shows celebrities getting involved to try and help the youth out. This example of youth in Thatcher’s Britain as they describe them as ‘jobless school leavers’ making them out to almost be lazy showing that the adults need to take control of their lives.
